Currently, the Rutherford B. H. Yates Museum owns six historic houses on 11 lots within Freedmen's Town. With our nation's current focus on redressing racial inequities, the Yates Museum is uniquely positioned to play a pivotal role in this movement. By shining a light on the accomplishments of the formerly enslaved peoples who built Freedmen's Town, Yates will foster more racial understanding, as well as an appreciation and pride for the role that Black Americans played in developing Houston.
Building Racial Bridges Campaign - 2021 will position the Yates Museum for future success by providing for strategic planning, professional staff, vibrant educational programs and preservation of its historic properties. The ultimate goal is to expand Yates Museum’s capacity to better serve the Houston community.
For all individual donors at the $250 level and above, we are pleased to provide you with a first edition, autographed copy of The Children and George, illustrated and written by African American artist Charles Criner. A children’s book that teaches the tradition of family and sacred spaces, The Children and George is an appropriate commemorative gift for our generous donors who support historic preservation.
